This past week-end, Tom and I visited my brother and his wife at their lake cottage. Wanting to treat them, we brought along a Turkish coffee maker (they love coffee as much as we do). Tom, the brew master, took control yet missed one detailed instruction: let the water come to a boil before adding the espresso grounds. The end result was a layer of sludge covering the bottom of our cups. It wasn’t the result he’d hoped for. Re-reading the directions, he found the missing piece of advice. Trying again using the specific directions he’d found made a huge difference. The coffee was good to the last drop.
If you want a successful marriage, follow the directions for wives recorded in the Bible. If you do, you’ll enjoy a delicious result!
Choose One Successful Marriage Idea and Work It All Week Long!
1. Protect His Name
Honor your husband in the way you speak about him to family and friends. Guard his reputation and do not let minor disagreements at home cause you to speak badly about him in public. This week, intentionally speak well of your husband to others. Don’t fabricate stories or lie, but do promote the good God has placed in him. Proverbs 12:4; 22:1
2. Admire Him
Most men appreciate verbal affirmation, but it’s also important that your non-verbals communicate admiration. Make it a habit to look at your husband in a respectful, appreciative way. Think kind thoughts toward him and he’ll be able to see the admiration in your eyes. Luke 6:45
3. Forgive His Shortcomings
Ruth Graham Bell said, “A happy marriage is the union of two good forgivers.” Forgiving can be almost impossible UNLESS you remember how much God has forgiven you. Prolonged unforgiveness turns into bitterness…which only hurts YOU! Many have been attributed with the following quote: “Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.” Need further encouragement to forgive? Read the following passages about unforgiveness and let them sink in. Mark 11:25; Matthew 18:21-35
4. Follow His Lead
If you want your husband to lead, you must be willing to follow. In The Beautiful Wife I wrote that a wife does herself harm by competing for control. A good helper will cooperate rather than compete with her husband, and that cooperation will mutually benefit them. A wife who helps her husband with the good of the marriage in mind has great influence. In what area is God nudging your heart to follow your husband’s lead? Ephesians 5:22-24
